This poll has been done before, no matter. My answers are the same, I think. My favorites from each of Beethoven's style periods are...

EARLY: Op. 14 #1 in E
MIDDLE: Op. 31 #2 in d "Tempest"
LATE: Op. 101 in A

Don't know what your skill level is, but if you've never played Beethoven before you should probably stick to the earlier works, op. 2 to op. 27. Randomly try op.14 #1 in E, my favorite early Sonata. It's underplayed, and is a good introduction to playing Beethoven, IMO.

Waldstein, Hammerklavier, and a battle going on between Op. 109 and Pastorale which is the reason I won't vote :) .

Interesting that the survey so far shows that (apart from the last 3 sonatas) the "named" sonatas are more popular than the unnamed ones.   Is that because they really are "better"  or more appealing/engaging, or simply because they are more established in the repertoire so people have heard them more?  If the latter, are they more established in the repertoire simply because they have names?

For what it's worth, my two favourite sonatas are both unnamed ones - op. 10 no.3 and op. 31 no.3

Nobody voted for the Hammerklavier. That's funny, I have always viewed it as the most influential piano piece in terms of starting the Romantic period. Kind of like Beethoven's ninth symphony.

Favorites are: Pathetique, Tempest, Appassionata, Op. 111

I've never been obsessive about Beethoven's sonatas, but I'm starting to listen to them more now.

Eb opus 7 is unamed and i voted for it... i really like it! and i voted for appassionata because i saw richard meyrick play it and it was great and i really like the last movement.
no offence but bet the reason those last 3 are the highest is because there the hardest...
i dont understand on this forum why many think that the harder the piece is the better is.

The last three sonatas are usually considered as three of the best works in piano literature, not because they're hard really.

2-1, Pathetique, Appassionata.

2-1 is probably my favorite, as the last movement was responsible for me learning to play piano in the first place!

Appassionata (that's my dream Beethoven sonata...  ::) ), Les Adieux (close contender, I heard a WONDERFUL performance by Schiff) and op. 90 (practicing at the moment...  ;D).

EARLY: Op. 14 #1 in E

Randomly playing it. :) Mostly because it's one of the easiest ones. I love it too, but not one of my favorites.

I don't think 110 is so great, and haven't listened to 109 enough to decide about it. 111 is my favorite Beethoven sonata, though.
