Am I too young to play FI?
on: April 17, 2006, 08:58:26 AM
I may have posted this in another forum but it was in the wrong section so I am posting here. Anyway, i'm 13 and I am attempting to master Fantasie Impromptu but some parts causes me to overlap my index finger over my thumb to play some of the keys and I am wondering, am I too young to play FI? Should I wait until my hands grow larger or should I continue with overlaping, and will it affect me in anyway? And its not only my hands that questions my ability to play FI, its the age also. All the videos I see of people playing FI are older than I am, and everytime I finish playing I wonder, "Am I ready for this?" and even though I finish this song, I feel that I haven accomplished anything and I feel like relearning the song over again but that doesn't help. Yes I need your psychological advice..

If you're getting discouraged, stop. However, age isn't an issue. I started playing this last year, and I'm 13 as well. Here's a recording of a 13 year old playing this piece:

I dont think its a matter of age really. More a matter of technical facility and musical maturity. I mean, Lang Lang was performing the entire Chopin Etudes at 13, right? Not sure how good a job he made, but it goes to show that there is no such thing as too young.

How could the piano know how old you are?

No you are not too young. I know a few people playing FI at 13 too. You can play anything as long as you enjoy playing it. You can get use to the fingering and playing first. With time when you grow up, you can play it again and add new things. I am still playing and polishing some of the pieces I played 25 years ago, when I was 13, of course I didn't play very well then, but at least I have get used to the fingers and it's easier to pick up now.

For us to answer this question, we will have to know something more than your age. Age is not a sole indicator of musicianship and technical facility.
