Clara Haskil
on: April 19, 2006, 08:08:33 PM
I am wondering if any one heard Clara Haskil(1895 -1960) and her interpretations of Mozart. Some say she is the best interpreter of Mozart and early romantic repertoire...Are there any recordings available of her?

I read in recent article about Lang Lang in Philly Inquirer  that he likes Clara Haskil Interpretations  of Mozart...what do u think? Here's the link for the article

She is a great pianist.  Her live 2nd mvt of Chopin 2nd concerto is up there with the best for sure.  Pretty much all her Mozart I heard is great.  Great Schumann ABEGG variations.

Most definitely outstanding for Mozart.

I still keep a recording of her since I was a child, it has Mozart's piano concerto K415, variations on "Ah, vous dirais-je Maman" and the sonata K280 F-major.

The melodies are phrased so eloquently ...it's an unbelievable recording, you have to hear it to believe it.

while attempting to find more recordings of clara, i found this joke at www.transcend.org/t_database/articles.php?ida=208

As a young piano student, Clara Haskill was riding on a train with a friend.  They discussed various famous pianists, and Clara said that Edwin Fischer played many wrong notes.  They did not know that Fischer was sitting in the next compartment and apparrently overheard their conversation.  When they all got out, Fischer asked with a big smile if the two young women could help him lift his bag from the luggage rack.  He said, "It is very heavy, it is full of my wrong notes."

ahahahah  aaargh.  (took arrghhh from the joke about the blind date).

everyone talks about clara positively.  wish i could find a recording.

No one played more tenderly or more lyrically than Haskil. Her Mozart is out of this world. Her Schumann is too. There used to be a recording of the piano concerto, Waldszenen, Kinderszenen and ABEGG variations on Philips that is worth checking out. The sound is not brilliant, but the playing is suberb.
