op.31 no.2 "Tempest" tremolos
on: April 20, 2006, 05:31:49 AM
For those of you who have played the first movement of this sonata, or anyone who has any ideas on the subject, how do you play the tremolos in the first movement? Particularly the ones in the exposition and recapitulation? Do you divide the triplet tremolos between the two hands, cross over, or a combination? How would one play the tremolos up to speed?

Thanks for your replies.

Well there are two options for the tremolos, back when I learned it as a teen I crossed over with my left hand while the right hand continued with the tremolo, but if I learned it again I think I would switch hands with the tremolo.  As with everything else in piano, bring it up to speed by practicing in such a way that you are completely relaxed and have full mental control, even if it means beginning at a glacier pace.

i have a good fingering from jean-paul billaud.  it is measure 25 lh in bass (thumb thumb thumb thumb on e, g, c#, e).  measure 26 reach over with lh and play the top with 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 on a, g#, a, b, a, a, a) then, thumb thumb thumb thumb, crossover.  etc.

the tremolos are played with the rh (521,313,131,313,152... can't remember but i think the  5, 2 at first gets ur hand out of the way for the crossover of the lh to the treble)  anyway...i have the rh playing the tremolos.
