speed
on: April 22, 2006, 02:30:39 AM
hello,
I am a kinda new pinao player, I have played for 2 years. (grade 2)
I have a problem of going to fast when playing.
I find it hard to keep the right tempo, I've tried tons of different ways.
When I really make myself go slower, to me , the song sounds not so good, like dull.
My mom hates when I go fast so thats why I really want to change it, also, I want to be good at play at different speeds and tempo's.
Thanks, :D
Pease give your thoughts of what could help! :)

Break up a piece into sections. (search for bernhards theories on this)

Pick a section.

Start slow (around 40-60 bpm for a quarter note)

Play each and every note in your head before you play it. (helps tremedously)

Repeat the section seven times in a row perfectly. (if you cant do it perfectly make the section smaller.

Raise the Metronome 1 or 2 clicks.

Repeat the section seven times in a row perfectly.

Raise and repeat until you've raise the metronome 10 clicks higher from where you started. (if you started at 40 stop at 50) Thats between 40-70 :o reps of a single section.

Move the next section.

Repeat.

When you are done, your brain will be drained. (but only until you get used to it)

Start the next day at the speed you left off (50).

Repeat.

Dont follow this exactly. Mold it to suit you. But dont cheat. You'd be cheatiing yourself.

There is physical speed and mental speed. This is what ah do to build mental speed. Without mental speed, physical speed will be hard to control and you will make many many many mistakes. You will also waste many many many many hours of practice.

For physical speed ah work the other way around 8)

Hi! let me helps u...
i would say playing a slow tempo piece is more difficult than playing a fast tempo piece, haha, it sounds weird right? if u don't have technical problems, of course u can play a fast tempo piece easily, but... but... a slow tempo piece, the speed shouldn't be dragging but it still in slow tempo, it's going and going without stopping, normally slow tempo piece will always make ppl feel sleepy, so what can we do for attract ppl's attention? as if walking slowly in a beautiful garden? (not like a car get stucked in traffic jam) first, u must have the correct pulse in heart, u can count it out of mouth if u like(count in pulse, not in quaver or crotchet beats), once u get the pulse i think u will be fine. i have the same problem as u, i tend to be faster and faster when i felt excited... so if u get distracted in counting while playing, i would suggest u to play with metronome, but don't rely on it, just for few times of practicing... cos it will affect ur playing sounds very metronomic... like robot! so once u get the speed, then play without metronome... haha... make the notes 'sing' would be better...
