You over did it, but that may not be why your fingers hurt.

I'm sure you can find a much better use of your time than playing Hanon for 3 hours.

Thanks, but i only did it that long because i'd never had any Hanon before,so I thought i should get the ball rolling and devote a lot of time to it, but i can see that I did over due it.
Well im still unsure why they are tense, since you say that might not be the reason.

Overuse is overuse, whether you play Hanon or Bach Preludes and Fugues. I would suggest the latter is more productive and rewarding.

In future, as in any endeavor,  I would suggest 'easy does it'. One doesn't run a marathon without many months of a gradual increase in training intensity.

I would say the same applies in piano playing.

Cheers

Unless you actually want to become very good at playing hanon, that is probably not a good idea.

It wasnt that quite boring, because i was excited to finally get some to practice with since i heard most teachers use it for thier students. I thought it was going to be hard cuz i heard others say they hated it,but it was easy. While i was playing with it i noticed that my left hand is a bit slower and weaker than my right and so now with that, i am working on speeding and making it stronger.I think a person can benefit from them, well thats what i think ::).....But i did play a little after i finished.

Did you feel your playing improve when you played afterwards?

In a way,  my hands felt "lighter" and quicker and i was able to play my fast pieces better. from what i've read before, some ppl think it is a waste of time to do them but i feel it can augment a person's playing.

I' m glad that i'm doing them,I have a performance to do friday for my school's career day guest speakers and i wanted to make sure the legato parts are all played "smooth" as they are intended to be.

I wish you well.  But, frankly, I would go out of my mind playing exercises for three solid hours.

Why not spend most of that time playing actual recital material?  Would be more interesting, wouldn't it?
