Classical Night coming soon - I'm scared!
on: April 23, 2006, 02:50:17 PM
Hey guys! I'm a newbie here!

Been around here to read the posts - nice site!

I'm just wondering if someone can offer me some advice to reduce my anxiety about the coming performace for the classical night in my school. I'm going to perform 2 songs...thinking about them makes my fingers sweaty (now the keyboard is a bit wet!).

I have limited time to practice but I just wanna perform. I love the feeling of being on stage...and now I'm scared.

Thanks.  :P

good look... just go on and think (preferably know) that you are going to enjoy playing for the other people - when you play, imagine that you are playing with them not to them so it is like you are all sharing the music. This works for me... and of course you have to enjoy it.
Don't think that you're going to play it the best you ever have - you'll always leave unhappy.
People won't care if you play wrong notes really... any number of them would be acceptable, unless you were getting payed thousands of pounds to play in a concert hall...
After thinking about all this, I've become really comfortable playing in front of people - in fact i like performing, and I'm sad when it's over. Playing at my school is fun! There are so many events going on, and i play in them normally, that i like it... really try hard to enjoy it! after performing a few times you will like it...
Tom
PS What are you playing?
Working on: Schubert - Piano Sonata D.664, Ravel - Sonatine, Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas

Here's my two cents:

Anxiety isn't harmful, it's ok: if you're ok with it. You're nervous because you want to do well, and therefore you are "building up" mental strength in advance, and it takes a lot of energy. Accept it!

Practice as much as you can, try to keep your heart in the music, and let the concert be a celebration.

Good luck,
BennoM

Thanks guys for the advice!

The performace was OK for me! But of course, there were some mistakes! I managed to scrapped through my second song much better compared to the first song (I got more relaxed after the first song, I guess)  ;)

Tompilk, I was playing the PIANO. Sorry for not telling the details on my last post...was so worried that time.  :o

Yeah, you're right, bennom, the concert was a celebration for me! I was so sad when it was over. I guess that was the feeling every performer should feel.

Thanks again for the thoughtful input from tompilk and bennom! Hope you guys enjoy playing your musical instrument!

Will chat with you guys again! I wish I have more time to spend in here everyday. But alas, my busy college timetable means that time is always against me! ???
