I want to purchase a music term dictionary, but I'm not quite sure which edition/publication is good. any suggestions?

Randel, Don, ed. New Harvard Dictionary of Music, 4th Ed. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2003, probably your best bet.  Typically the New Grove isn't accurate and widely agreed upon.
