In need of advice : )
on: April 25, 2006, 04:48:07 PM
Hi all! I just signed in and though I know it's inapropriate to start a new topic I decided to do so.. : ) I'm 17, from bulgaria and i recently started playing. So far i've learned to play "Imagine" by John Lenon and "Let it be". to be honest i have no idea of chords and stuff and if someone asks me to play a tone i start counting from C .. : ) I have no teacher, despite that - a lot of enthusiasm. My question is : where should I really start from? What should I start playing and what do I MUST know i theory? Thanks a lot in advance and again sorry for flooding the forum.

Definitely start by browsing old forum posts and contributing on this forum. We have a number of verteran players and teachers, so use the search tool to help you research.
Music theory isn't necssary early on, but it can only improve your abilities. Try looking over at
www.musictheory.net
. They have some excellent animated tutorials on basic theory.
From what I can tell of the general opinion on this forum, as soon as you can read both clefs, you should start on learning and memorizing the two-part Bach inventions. One of the hardest things to get used to playing piano is training your two hands to do different things simultaneously. Do a search on "bach inventions" for in depth advice.
