walking around with an instrument
on: April 28, 2006, 06:05:38 AM
Are you ever jealous of people with mobile instruments? They can dress up and look sexy walking away with their instruments. Pianists can't really do that. Sometimes I would like strangers to know that I'm a musician without having to talk to them.

My roommate takes the metro to his cello lessons, and he hates that everyone stares at him for dragging along a cello. He complains about how people always try to get into inane conversations with him, along the lines of "Oh, you play cello? My father's best friend owns a cello, I think! Although he doesn't play it anymore... but isn't that cool?"
I'm afraid I have to agree with him. It's bad enough after concerts having to politely engage in conversation with old ladies who's grandchildren played piano in elementary school. I wouldn't want to be accosted about it everywhere I go.
...but on the other hand, it'd be pretty cool to be able to carry my piano with me. So really, I agree with you.

I'd love to busk in the streets of Oxford playing a grand piano, it would be great fun! Though probably not very good for the piano...
Have you guys seen that roll-up piano? It doesn't have the full keyboard, but would still be pretty cool!

i actually saw a guy busking on his keyboard in NZ when i was there- too impressive! man, luggin the giant thing, and an amp, that's effort haha. then i saw a guy with a harp on the train, that was cool, me and my friend were like wow imagine having to lug that around
meanwhile i just have my drumsticks popping out of my bag some days, and on fridays carry my flute around, and then read scores on the train whilst listening to the music. yes i am a showoff but it's just so fun to flaunt it when everyone else on the train is off to work in some office building!!
