Ravel- Scarbo
on: April 28, 2006, 10:02:00 AM
Just a couple of questions:

At the moment, I'm taking it at dotted crotchet= 76.. how much faster does it need to go? i've heard tons of recordings and they all vary... so whats like the average speed?

Finally... i have major trouble with bars 32-36 (first theme)... the problem is the triplets in the left hand just wont seem to go fast enough.. and i cant practise it for too long because it kills my hand. the rest of the piece is fine... just these 4-5 bars and where they are repeated at bars 110-113. any tips?

Try some rhythm practice, doing groups of notes extremely fast, but stopping on every third note to prepare for the next group, then do a different rhythm.  Also try subdividing the LH so you're thinking about every beat instead of every note.

I haven't played Scarbo yet, but that's my suggestion, one pianist to another... good luck!

for measures 32-36, practice the left hand multiple ways, and alone.

Try playing it with a strong fingeraction, slowly, no pedal, connecting all of the notes, with some armweight.

Then try it stacatto and light (maybe Mezzo Piano), not connected at all, letting your arm perform the lateral movement and letting your fingers strike when they are above the keys.

This helped me greatly.

Rhythms always help too (8th 16th 16th, 8th 16th 16th, or 16th 16th 8th, etc)

I started this piece, and had too much to do and quit, but I will be learning it this summer, so keep in touch we can discuss it.

Do you have aol instant messenger?

Well here is fingering I've use for the triplets in bars 32-36
Bar32: 521 542 142
Bar33: 124 124 124
Bar34: 521 421 241
Bar35: 521 542 142
Bar36: 124 124 124

They should be practiced in groups, each group very rapidly a few times, then try to connect groups one at a time.

521
542142124
124
124521
421241
521
5241421
24124124

Hope this helps in some way. Notice that the 3rd is on holiday :)
