Exercises to train finger equality
on: May 03, 2006, 09:21:43 PM
Can anyone recommend any exercises that will bring the left hand to the same strength as the right hand, and also the outer fingers to the same strength as the inner fingers?

Bach Inventions and Sinfonias

Greetings.

Those are pieces. Concerning excercises, I recommend Czerny. Moszkowski's etude pieces are also very helpfull.

Bach inventions work perfectly well as excersizes for developing finger independence and dexterity, besides you also get some nice pieces for your work  :)

You know, I've been looking recently at the Brahms 51 exercises.  Some of these are great for strengthening the 3rd and 4th fingers.

Maybe you could start learning (i dont know what your lvl is) some left hand orientated etudes from chopin, i learned alot that way. 2 good etudes are: opus 10, no4 and op 10 no 12.
These pieces are fun to play but be sure you play it slowly, dont rush it and 'think' every finger on the notes.

Didnt Godowsky arrange an etude for left hand based on chopin's etude op 10/2? That should train your 3/4 fingers well ;)

As long as you dont play Hanon on a mechanical way (put your mind on level zero and push your fingers down) Hanon shouldnt be neglected. Lots of the current virtuozes used Hanon. I personally think that the biggest mistake that people make who use Hanon as practising material is doing it mindlessly. The process of getting controll over your finger is a process of the brains, wich arent used used that way.
So dont set yourself a goal like, "i want to play Hanon at least 2 hours a day".
Instead, open the Hanon book, go to the page wich trains the problematic fingers.
Close your eyes and play it slowly and 'think every finger down'.

Here you have the raison, that's very important, playing with your brain :)
I never worked Hanon... i started to play piano it's now only 7months..
I looked into his book, but don't know way (maybe a wrong) i don't liked his exercices. He use only 2 notes... Why ?
I feel of playing Hanon (if we can speak here about playing..) will only developped a machinaly gesture of the hand..
I thinked to starts to travel my hand, but was more going for Czerny than Hanon....

Hanon, Czerny, who other ? I suppose the list is a quite long, no ?

I like Burgmüller's easy etudes, because, not only they train your fingers, but many of them are very beautiful too. You can find them at www.mutopiaproject.org

I think he has given up.

He might show you links to another 3,000 posts on similar subjects.

Anyway, everyone here now knows that this can only be achieved by surgery.

I also use the modulating diminished 7th chords finger independance excercises. I play the 5 note chords with both hands and then repeat finger patterns in the chords. My book also has excercises on those chords such as playing notes with other fingers whilest holding down one note with thumbs. There are very many excercises like this that I use.
