Dusk had fallen,  steam from the sewer was rising, and Stanovich walked.

The sinuous vapors twisted around his feet as he tred lightly on the grating, too preoccupied to realize that since steam was rising from the sewer and his name was Stanovich, it would be a perfect setup for a Russian spy adventure.

He was  too modest to ever imagine his life as the center of an exciting adventure story, and the eerie stillness of the dank alley was making him wish he could tell Ilsa who he really was.

Ilsa's cryptic use of diction in a letter she wrote made him ponder what could this mean? A conundrum that needed precise thinking, but the malodor of the sewer vapors from the dank alley gave him a feeling of malaise as he continued to traverse thru the dank alley.

His stomach lurched in his abdomen and he realized that something more than the odour was affecting him. He had eaten salmon for supper...had he also ingested salmonella?

suddenly, his modesty was replaced by urgency.  he began to scribble his real name on a piece of paper so that if his body were found by the secret police, they could change his birth certificate to match.
