theory books
on: May 07, 2006, 10:18:23 PM
Hi everyone,

I am planning to start teaching children music thoery. Could anyone advise me some good workbooks, musical games, rhythm games or links to the websites.
Is there any specialist shop selling books about music pedagogy, music theory etc. Internet shopping is quite advance but I need to see the book to decide if it is right for me. This internet shopping doesn't allow me.
Could anyone please help me. All answers are truly appreciated.

i think i just saw something interactive at:

www.8notes.com    click on 'piano' and then scroll down to the interactive stuff.

and, there's some easy music here:

www.pitt.edu/~deben/freebiesalpha.html

also, www.gardenofpraise.com  has some stuff under 'teachers' and then 'theory' or something like that.

hope this helps.  print everything extra large.  that's what i've learned!  esp. for very young children.  and, if they can sing intervals, they'll remember them forever.  kodaly has some good stuff. i have a book entitled 'sound thinking' with a lot of kodaly ideas in it.  you can find whatever method you are looking for under the pedagogy class textbooks of your own nearest uni library.  i wait until classes are underway and everyone has a textbook and then - go see what's left over.

ps  i really like bastien series theory books, but also have recently bought the adult level one theory book of alfred and it's pretty good.  and, i bought nancy and randall faber's 'piano adventures.'  the bastien i like for 4-12 years old.  the 'piano adventures' maybe for 9-13 yrs. and the adult theory for teenagers (any series).  i've found they like to be challenged much more and having too easy of a theory book can be insulting.

if you have a lot of time to go through aural as well as visual theory - it's nice.  seems that is often overlooked and a weakness of many students.  kodaly kind of helps this because they utilize a lot of singing when children are young.  this develops their ear to match pitches.  and, they start being able to guess intervals.  i vaguely remember learning the hand signs in 7th or 8th grade with a choral teacher (moveable 'do') and it was awesome how the kids could read music by the end of the year (even if they didn't read all the notes yet).

don't overlook some jazz series.  i'm realizing there's some good stuff there. for instance, just playing around with rhythms and chords at the same time makes it more 'fun.'  jazz musicians probably know more about theory than most beginning/intermediate classical pianists.  plus, it gives an outlet for just messing around when doing repetitive stuff as scales, chords, and modulations.

I don't bother with any of the Piano Adventures, Bastien, Alfred music theory books. There's just not enough material in them. I like the Fundamentals of Piano Theory series by Keith Snell, and I also use Schaum note speller (for beginners only) as a supplement.
