Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges. Small home recital
on: May 08, 2006, 09:48:40 PM
My friends and I are going to organize a small recital at a party and pieces to be played are:
Scarlatti K.160
Grieg Sonata first movement
Ravel Sonatine
Prokofiev Suggestion Diabolique

I'd like to these to be performed in order of difficulty. What is the order of difficulty?

Thanks.

If I were to add the Poulenc Intermezzo in Ab, where would it go difficulty-wise? best place in program?

I don't really know the difficulty of the poulenc intermezzo, but I'm just interested in why you chose the specific order of in order of increasing difficulty.  Is it so your audience doesn't get all impressed with one piece, and then feels bored when you play something calmer.  I too like to go out with a bang in recitals, but I like to mix up the difficult pieces with the easier ones for more of a programmatic effect.

Nice idea having a home recital like this... I end up being made to play (though most of the time i enjoy it all the same) every time someone comes to our house... would be nice just to do it in a slightly more organised occasion like this.  Good luck! (sorry for not being more helpful)
