Greatest composer with still not-recorded works
on: May 12, 2006, 05:24:52 PM
Who is the greatest composer who still has some finished works (not necessarily published) that were never recorded?

I can imagine that every single bar written by say Bach, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Mendelsohn, Tchaikovsky, etc.. has been recorded.

So, who is your candidate?

not mendelssohn. I read an article that was talking about alot of unpublished works that have never been recorded. Apparently some pianist was working on a world -premiere cd. Even with that, there was still more music to be played.

one that comes to mind is hummel. he wrote a large number of works, yet a lot of them still havent been recorded, or at least as far as i know. his best works are his 10 (?) sonatas and his 8 piano concertos, even though i havent heard all of each.

Sorabji.

Plus about everybody else. Excluding those few which have been elevated to divine rank because of some twist of fate.

That's becuase he wrote a lot of crap! (not my wording, it's from the reading the intro to a volume of his sonatas)

youre inviting a lot of hostility from me by saying that hummel wrote a lot of crap. sure, not everything is perfect, but certain works are very well written and really make a nice impression.

@elevateme: you best keep your anti-sorabjian sentiments to yourself. there are a lot of sorabjiphiles here that wouldnt take too kindly to that.

hes stating his opinion, he isnt saying sorabji is bad, just that he hates him.

+ i love hummel's rondo favori, cziffra, libetta, and friedman all play it wonderfully

Fair comment, really. Lots of people won't agree with him, but not only is he entitled to his opinion, the same kind of thing could be said by anyone whoever the composer was.

I'm confused! I didn't mention I hated Sorabji - in fact I have never heard his work and I'm not dumb enough to make a comment on it without listening to it.
As for my Hummel comment, I was merely quoting from a book and giving a possible reason for not recording all of his works! Read properly people!

There are believe it or not a lot óf unfinished Beethoven works that havenīt been recorded.

He almost finished the first movement of his String Quintet in C before he dies and that movement may be his greatest composition ever.

Just listen to the midi below it arranged for quartet though

https://www.unheardbeethoven.org/search/search.pl?piece=woo62gp1.mid

Watch out for the fugato part between 5.30-6.00

if that isnīt one of the best fugatoparts ever composed, nothing is!

Stevie: I tried to arrange that Fugato for piano without success you have to have a duo to make it work.

The rest of the the C Quintet is also very good and you can hear what was composed by Beethoven and what wasnīt.

The part I linked is the only one that Beethoven almost finished himself.

Itīs so sad that Beethoven didnīt live for another 10 years.

Speaking for myself, I have no desire to burn you or anyone else at the stake or anywhere else for any reason - and certainly not for hating Sorabji! Sorabji isn't everyone's glass of nectar - nor should he be, nor need he be, nor did he expect to be!

beethoven's violin concerto op. 61 transcribed by beethoven himself for the piano. i finally managed to find the sheet music but the only recording i have heard of is one by barenboim and when i asked the hmv store for it i was told they hadn't stocked it for 5 yrs.
