math tutoring online?
on: May 12, 2006, 11:32:59 PM
this summer i told my son - no more games games games all day in the summer.  has to get a summer job and also some tutoring in math - but, alas there's not as much money to spend on the tutoring so i'd like to alternate it with a site on the internet that's interactive.  are there any good sites for preparing for 11th grade (so he doesn't forget what he's doing in 10th grade?)  he's been doing algebra and a bit of geometry.  i think maybe more geometry and intro to calculus is what we're looking for.  need a step-by-step kind of thing so he can practice because i never got past algebra II and am the parent who is home during the day.

he told me that he wanted to do a 2 day marathon of games like he did last summer?  i asked, when was that?  apparrently some weekday or weekend he was on that long.  funny i don't remember anything like that - but said that his days of gaming and then sleeping is not getting him anywhere.  i know he's partly joking to get a rise out of me, but HELP - i have to get him doing harder math.  he's very capable.

I bought a math CD for my older daughter and a typing tutor for my younger, and required them each to do one lesson before playing a computer game.

It didn't last the whole summer but maybe helped a little.

This might not help, but 'Numbers Up 2 V1.1 Baggin' the Dragon' is a pretty good cd for most age groups - though older children might think it's ...*pause*... it'll grow on them.  =)

I don't know about websites, but books, though old-fashioned, can be quite useful. I recommend

Algebra the Easy Way by Douglas Downing ($10 on Amazon)

I have a slightly older edition of this book but I think they should be fairly similar. Don't be fooled by the title, this isn't some "for dummies" gimmick written for students too lazy to study properly. It tries to liven up math by weaving math concepts into a sort of fantasy novel, and it works very well. The student feels like they are actually discovering the foundations of algebra from the ground up, as opposed to some textbooks that just vomit formulas at you and tell you to memorize them without explaining what's behind them. Some of the theoretical explanations take a while to digest and some problems might stump university-level math students but the fantasy theme definitely makes the subject accessible. After mastering the material in this book your son will know enough algebra for calculus (though he still needs to know geometry and trigonometry, of course).

You might want to check out some other books in the "Easy Way" series. Though I don't expect them to be as good as this one.

Hope this helps.
