My vote for the hardest etudes is a group. Depending upon one's technique, one may be more difficult than the others, but I consider these the most generally difficult Chopin etudes:
op. 10 #1,2
op. 25 # 4,6,11,12

and what about Cortot's rendition of the etudes... I think he really knows these pieces.... I've heard many people play them... but Cortot really impresses me
