Handel Keyboard Suites
on: May 15, 2006, 03:17:47 PM
I am interested in learning these Suites. What are the better editions and are there recordings (piano) available?

Richter, along with Gavrilov, have recorded all of them live (half of them played by Richter, the others by Gavrilov). The sound is not ideal, but the play is very good.

Nice choice. I'm fond of the the Keith Jarret's CD, not only by his playing but also for his own interesting notes. I love specially HVW 447 in D Minor and HVW440 in Bb Major. Try this link for a glimpse:

About the sheet music, I'd choose

Naxos has the Suites on an actual harpsichord. Not particularly useful if you're learning them for the piano, but still more authentic and fun to listen to.

The edition you would most likely enjoy for Handel keyboard works would be Barenreiter Urtext. They publish four volumes of his complete keyboard works in the new critical edition. They are very well laid out and the newer printed editions, 2004 and later, are larger and they stay open! The cover is laminated so you don't have to worry about the cover wearing down after extensive use and finally falling apart.
