Mikhail Pletnev/RNO/Rostopovich - Rach 3
on: May 16, 2006, 06:13:53 PM
I have reed in many web sites that this is the best recording of Rach 3 so far. (Terms of sounds quality and the best interpretation)

Is this true?

Do you people have it?

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Mmmm.. I don't think it's actually the best in interpretation, but it does have a good sound. You can find it here:

https://classic.chubrik.ru/Rachmaninov/

There are 3x Horowitz, Rach, Pletnev, Ashkenazy (yuck), Cliburn, Kissin & Volodos.

Pd. That page has also a lot of other works (mp3) and a lot of composers, with nice interpreters.

It has the best sound quality, recording quality and even orchestral performance, in my opinion. It's also a brilliant interpretation on Pletnev's part, but definitely not the best.

It's one of my favourite Rach 3s.

Stephen Hough's recording is by far the best.  He stays true to the originality of the work using a very fast tempo like rach's own recording.  Check it out if you havent heard it before.

Have not listened to this particularly. Sound quality may be. Pletnev's interpretations are seldom the best with the exception  of Scarlatti sonatas on Virgin. I seldom warm up to his interpretive style. To me Cliburn remains my favorite followed closed by Weissenberg and Sokolov.

Hard to say because both are very good. The recording quality is much, much better on Pletnev's part and even the orchestral performance of the Russian National Orchestra, in my opinion, is slightly better than the Berlin. However Volodos' playing far outstrips Pletnev's.

I agree that Stephen Hough's recording is the best. And I've heard many of them including Volodos, Hamelin, Horowitz (2x), Lugansky, Sokolov, Rachmaninov, Ashkenazy, Helfgott etc.

I highly recommend Hough!
