bbc young musician of the year 2006
on: May 19, 2006, 01:48:50 PM
has anyone been watching the bbc young musician of the year competition? most of the programmes have been on bbc4 at the moment but the final is on bbc 2 on saturday. i thought the piano finalist is really good, she's playing saint-saens piano concerto no.2, i've never heard it though. how do you think she will do? i was really impressed by the clarinetist too, it would be nice if he won.

I watched the pianist semi-final and have seen the little indian kid at a few concerts. He was watching, not playing. I also saw him in a masterclass where he played Tarantella, and his fingerwork was amazing! But there were a lot of things the teacher (who was Russian and quite strict) didn't like...

Will they show the entire concerto?? I hope they do... If they don't, I don't think I'll watch it.

ah he didnt win it.. only the piano section... theres laods available on the bbc website about it... freddy kempf won the whole comp... (piano section and overall.)

I do think that they are showing the whole lot.. the requirements were to have a concerto less than 20 mins long (for the final)... that kicks a lot of repertoire out of the window..
Tom
PS i thought the little asian kid was good to be playing Mephisto Waltz... I agreed with Vanessa Latarche that I've heard more interesing versions before... (i had a masterclass with her a year ago and she absolutely pwned me... oh dear... oh well...)

i have legendarily been following it too

ss2 is a great choice, probably the best concerto for that time frame, id choose it

thought all the semifinalists were good, but none astounded me, especially technically

i suppose theres a big difference between this competition and other competitions in more technically disciplined countries

of course, musically, britain is as good as any other, but i dont think they have the technical passion to strive for more virtuosity...or maybe the virtuosos didnt make it to the semis?

Most judges will tend to snub at virtuosity, particularly if it's coming from kids as it reinforces the belief that child prodigies are all fingers and no music.

virtuosity does not mean no music...

anyway, the point was that these young pianists arent anywhere near the technical level of young pianists in certain other countries

That's what being British is all about! Now put your left leg in, and then out. Go on, it's fun!. Now you have an insect on it, so shake it all about.

Now you know what it's really about ;D

its at 5:20 on BBC 2. yeah i think they definitely show the whole concerto. to be honest i find the percussion quite boring to watch unless they're really extrovert and exciting, which the boy who won the percussion isnt really. and im not particularly interested in the brass but i have a feeling he might win, he's very good.

talk about sublime to the ridiculous ..... immediately after its  THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST on BBC 1!! wooooh

That is true.

Any child over 6 years old in England is well aware of their legal rights and would sue if made to practice.

There exists a lack of discipline amongst the young in England, which is one of the factors why we do not produce a lot of great pianists.

President Bliar and his education reforms will finish England off for ever.

I meant to enter this competition, but by the time I got round to applying, was too late.  Not being terribly prodigeous... I doubt I would have got past the first or second rounds.  Always feel really bad when seeing talented wee kids like that...  Ah well... makes decent TV! (for a change)
