How long did you have a teacher for?

For me, I've had a teacher for eight years, stopped for a year (cause of school) and plan to start again next year for about two years.

How about you fellows?

The longest i have had a teacher for is 2 years.

The shortest is 12 minutes.

The shortest for me was 3 minutes, though that was for cello.

For piano, I was with my old teacher for 12 years, and my new teacher for 2 years. I'm getting another teacher in the fall (my current teacher is retiring).

i had my first one for 3 years, then switched cos i hated her, had the next for 3 years, then she moved to queensland, then had the next one for 6 years, and then switched cos she wasn't pushing me hard enough, and have had my current one since the beginning of the year, and am planning on staying with her for 2007 and 2008. then i will stop having lessons and go get a job haha.

I had my first one for 2 years, then she said she couldn't teach me anymore and I should find a better teacher.  Studied with someone in St. Louis for a few months and then had the opportunity to study with one of the best teachers in the country and so I switched teachers.  I studied with this person until her death 2 years later, then studied with a professor from Kansas for 6 years (4 of which were my undergrad years).  I've now studied with my current teacher for almost a year now here in Arizona.

So the most I've studied with a single teacher was 6 years.  Shortest was about 3 months.

I had a teacher since i was almost 4 till 14. The rest is self-taught (im 24 now and on the harder chopin-etudes levesl).

Longest- 2 years (not including summers).

Shortest (which also seemed the longest)- 1 month

Best- 3 months last summer.

Combined- 3-4 years, I suppose. (sporadically since I was about 8 or 9)

I've had 5 different teachers.

Too busy with life and studies to take lessons right now.

my latest teacher, i've had three semesters with.  it wasn't enough.  i want more.  basically, i have the four years for a bachelor degree in piano performance (that was four years of lessons and performing/accompanying/studying)- and also about 8 years with another teacher before that.  i was attached to both of them, and found it very difficult to move from one teacher to another.  they are like family or something. 

many students think that the teacher is always there to provide information.  with my last teacher, even though he provided a lot of great information, he showed us how and what we should do for ourselves - and he was no babysitter.  of course, he could have easily had us all going over for help every minute/second - but he'd do these strange things to get us away.  (kind of like with children - you get tired after a while and bat them around - figuratively speaking - as bears do).  i used to ask these questions hoping for some kind of deep answer.  the only deep answer is lots of practice and thinking straight.  something i hope to do someday. 

i tend to like movies and popcorn - so he zeroed in my weakness and suggested that all the students get together this one saturday afternoon and watch videos of other pianists (a competiton or something).  i thought he was serious.  i got all excited and had to choose what clothes to wear - to bake some brownies - only to drive there and find out he was teaching lessons all afternoon - and this was simply another ploy to show me that being a serious performer doesn't mean watching videos and eating brownies (to my dismay).

Not counting my father, I had one teacher for a couple of years at the age of eight, and another for about three years of formal (formal meaning regular, certainly not conventional) lessons at about fifteen to eighteen. After that, aside from two one-off lessons of an hour for purely physical issues, I have found teachers to be a complete waste of my time (and theirs) and my money.  Generally speaking, the more qualifications they have and the better known they are, the more remarkable their paucity of ideas and enthusiasm.

Mom taught me a few years then my nwe teacher i had for like a year, and then I stopped for 2 years, new teacher, 2 years study, break, then back to my last teacher since that time.

I had one teacher for almost 5 years. I stopped my lessons 2 years ago. I think I'm too used to being able to practice as I like and play what I want to get another one now, though I probably should since I've been trying to get around to doing my diploma for 3 years now... Lazy.
