"Where have i known you before"...chords

Howdy

Im trying to play Return to forever - Where have i known you before by ear... a fairly simple piece, i thought. But noooooo. I have no problem with the right hand, but i just cant seem to figure out what (kind of) chords to play in the left. I know that the best way to learn is by ear, but i need some help here, considering im quite new to this genre.

So, i thought that asking here is better than banging my head in the wall because of frustration. Could anyone who has played this before, please tell me what the main chords is?

the chords are Dmaj7 and Cmaj7, except bars 4-6 (Dmaj7 Gmaj7 Em11, Dadd9 Bsus2 Gmaj7, D6/9 Gmaj7) and bars 8-10 (Dmaj7 B(m)sus4, Bsus4 Em11, Gmaj7).
