There's an interesting radio programme on the BBC about Bach's inventions. It talks especially about how even a two-voice invention actually weaves many different voice together and illustrates the points with a pianist in the studio emphasising certain voices.

See: https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/discoveringmusic/audioarchive.shtml

Then see the A-Z listings and BACH - inventions

Best,
Goose

There is a great site which analyses all of the Fugues from the WTC. Sorry, dont have a link but you'll find it on Google no problem. Check my past threads and it will be on there, one titled 'Harmonic Progression in Bach Inventions' or something like that.

Its highly applicable to the Inventions anyway, so worth a look.

There is a software, it is called J.S. Bach - Die Inventionen, Einführung und Analyse (= The Inventions, Introduction and Analysis), I have only the german version, I don't know if there are versions in other languages. This program explains very detailed how the 15 inventions are composed, how you analyse them, including scores and soundfiles (harpsichord).  For further information write an E-Mail: info@capella.de or J.Keitsch@capella.de

Greetings, Josef

I feel your pain! I'm playing a number of the 3 Part Inventions, and I've been almost everywhere. The results have not been good. Online nothing particularly useful. In print isn't that much better -- there is a doctoral dissertation by one author, and two books by another author which sound promising, but they're almost entirely structural -- i.e. they don't even mention the Picardy third at the end of the C minor 3 part invention.  I've combed the major musicology journals which are machine-searchable, and there are occasional points here and there, but nothing extended. Same for Grove.

So I'm sitting down and doing it myself. That's not much help, but if there's something of ready access Out There, I've not found it.
