Chased by the Sun God/Dance of the Lotus/Improvisations
on: May 26, 2006, 05:18:48 PM
I don't know if this is allowed in the Audition Room, but I'm posting a recording of my own pieces put together with extended improvisation. Please tell me if this is allowed so that I don't do the same thing again.

of course it's allowed!
encouraged, even! There's some really good stuff in here, reminds me a wee bit of keith jarrett. Actually, I enjoy it more than a lot of early keith jarrett that's for sure! keep up the good work!

The rhythmic variety is pleasing, if a trifle motoric for my taste. As this is probably deliberate in this particular piece, my preferences are of little significance one way or the other in any general sense. The one or two sudden changes in harmony were effective and I found myself wanting to hear many more of them. In this type of playing I don't think it matters where the harmony goes as long as change occurs; a sweeping statement, but probably true nonetheless. In other words, the usual restrictions to related keys, conventional progressions and so on can largely be forgotten in the interest of spontaneous impulse. The chord vocabulary in the twelve positions has to be at the fingertips though.
There is indeed a similarity of certain parts of it to early Jarrett, and it is true that yours is the more appealing, at least in the short term, simply because it changes more frequently and you do not "grind". It might pay to spend time on your finger work as I feel crystal clear, perfect finger strokes enhance rhythmic cells of this type more than legato, weight driven groups. In the end, however, the choice is in the hands of the player.
I look forward to hearing further and perhaps varied work from you.

Thanks for the tips. I will also have to check out Keith Jarret. Is he a Jazz composer by any chance?

Keith Jarrett is awesome. He is known for his extended spontaneous piano improvisations. He covers pretty much all styles: blues, gospel, jazz, romantic, baroque, avante-garde atonal improv (even plucks the strings of the piano and things like that), minimalism and everything in-between which never became its own era of music. haha I'm actually very surprised you haven't heard of him, I think you'd really dig his work. I'd personally reccommend:
Koln Concert
Vienna Concert
Paris Concert
Radiance
