What kind of external speakers do you use?
on: May 27, 2006, 12:46:03 AM
I just bought a yamaha p-120 with speakers from a drummer who wanted to learn to play piano, but just ended up jamming along with the tracks on the piano... ::)...The speakers are rokit 5 studio monitor speakers. They are absolutely amazing, but I noticed that one of them is crackling when I go low. I am sure that this is because in order to play drums along with the tracks you'd have to crank it quite a bit...but I am also wondering if studio monitor speakers are made to handle the low end of a grand piano/organ at a reasonable volume (less than one quarter volume on the piano)? Luckily I do home record/mix so I will probably just recruit those speakers to record with..but I need something for my p-120....what kind of speakers are popular in these parts?

Studio monitors certainly are designed to handle that volume and more.

It sounds like one of your speakers is blown, probably from the use you imagineed.  Or, less likely, there's a bad connection that crackles from the vibration-- but probably its just blown.  "Powered monitors" are what you're looking at, ones that don't require an external amplifier.  These are designed for use in a studio.  It seems like the rokits are a good product... yours is just busted.

I don't use my P80 at home, so I never got little monitors (I have all sorts of PA gear).  But the Yamaha dealer that sold me my P-80 had some little powered speakers that came with a little subwoofer and sounded great.  (the subwoofer is a third speaker specifically fot the bass).I think the whole set was under $100.

I don't know if these guys have the best prices, but here's the dealer I used, and the guy that runs the place, Dave, will know what they are... he was pretty enthusiastic about them.
