hand pain- please advise!!
on: May 31, 2006, 05:21:57 PM
i'm getting ready for a performance this sunday including a bach prelude and fugue and chopin's etude 10/12 (revolutionary) and i've been experiencing some pain in my left hand.

the pain is usually at the start of my practice, some days it's there and others not.

it's right on the back of my left hand, above the wrist. it's kind of tense and if i practice the etude enough it gets worse. it's not a really bad pain or anything, but it's kind of scary. :-\

what do you all suggest? i'm open to any ideas. i always warm up before my practice sessions, usually with scales and arpeggios in all 24 keys followed by the first book of czerny school of velocity.

interestingly enough i could practice 10/1 for hours and hours and never experience any kind of pain in my right hand. but the stupid little 10/12 is giving me some trouble.

so i'd appreciate your thoughts. thanks all

Sounds like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  :o

Bend your wrist forward like a duck's head all the way. see if theres any pain.
If there is go see a doctor.

Yes, I used to have same pain, but it comes to me after playing (couple of hours playing) and sometimes it was so bad that I couldnt even sleep :(.. well this pain gone and I have no more problems (2 years).. I wish you the same!!
What I think is that this happens when you are learning new skill, and with time the pain will gone cause your hand will become more stronger..
Good luck

One day I'll wake up and play my perfect Ocean etude. That day I'll be simply...happy

how much time do you spend on the computer each day?  That could have something to do with it.  Keyboards are bad for a pianist
