Can anyone help me identify this piece?
on: June 01, 2006, 01:54:32 AM
My teacher just assigned me this piece by Haydn (see attached JPEG).  It's from an anthology (International Library of Piano Music, Vol.3, pp.306-7).  However, the book does not give an opus number.  The only title given is "Allegretto" (the book's index calls it "Allegretto - Scherzino").  Obviously it's in F major.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to track down a recording of this -- if I can find out where it comes from!

Thanks in advance!

It's actually a transcription of the 4th mvmt. of his 'Lark' string quartet #67 in D Op. 64.

That's it!  Thank you all chopin!

After reading your post, I listened to a recording of this movement by the Angeles Quartet.  In the original string quartet version the movement is marked "vivace" rather than "allegretto."  Indeed, trying to play it at the same speed as the Angeles fiddlers would turn it from a Grade 2 piece into a Grade 7 in no time!

Do you know if this keyboard transcription was done by Haydn himself, or someone else?  Do you know of any keyboard recordings?

Actually, I think it is his string quartet #53, not 67.  Pardon!
From the sound of it (the vivace -> allegro difference) it's all the work of an editor.  I don't think Hadyn transcribed his own works.
