on: June 03, 2006, 04:25:42 AM
This is a good topic IMO
Which Beethoven sonata was a favorite among 19th century virtuosos? (1800 to 1899)

Clara Schumann----- ¿¿??
Franz Liszt ----- ¿Hammerklavier?
Sigismond Thalberg----- ¿¿??
Frederic Chopin ------¿Num 12 in A flat?
Charles Alkan --------- ¿Hammerklavier?
Henry Charles Litolff --------¿¿??
Cesar Franck --------¿¿??
Johannes Brahms -------¿Appassionata?
Anton Rubinstein -------¿¿??
Camile Saint Saens -----¿¿??
Eugen D'albert --------¿¿??
Moritz Moszkowski-----¿¿??
Vladimir von Pachmann -----¿¿??
Ferruccio Busoni ---------- ¿Pathétique?
Edward McDowell--------¿¿??
Sergei Rachmaninov-------¿¿??
Alexander Scriabin--------¿¿??
Ignaz Jan Paderewski --------¿¿??
Max Reger---------¿¿??
Arthur Rubinstein-----¿Moonlight?
Wilhelm Kempff -------¿Pathétique?
Please colaborate.

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Where are you getting these from? Are they pure conjecture?
Anyway. I know Alkan was a fan of Sonata #31 (op 110). I think he played it in one or more of his
Petits Concerts
as an old fart. Alkan also stunned Vincent D'Indy's when he played the 3rd movement for him alone.

Most convoluted and useless poll/thread ever.

I dont think so
I love how people post for the sake of posting, and without qualification to their opinions.
I don't know that we can assume that any of these sonatas are favorites of the said pianists, but I will confirm that Liszt played the Hammerklavier, and superbly at that - he was the first to "solve the enigma."
