Used to. Once forgot to wear underwear to a session and one of the girl teaching assistants had to do up my belt because I had no idea how to do it  ::)

psychological problems like attention deficit?  or do students that have this usually take the class - and the teacher knocks it out of them.  they start paying attention so the don't get hit?  i don't know.  just making a joke.  at our local cvs there is a karate studio right nearby - so while i wait for my kids - i can see thru the window.  they're all about 7-8 years old at the time i usally go - and they look hyper.  they come out all tired - and their parents profusely thank the instructors.

tai chi sounds more interesting to me.  i don't think i can stand on one leg very long - but on my bicycle i used to try a form of bicycle tai chi.  i would ride with no hands, then try one foot, then the other foot.  when much younger (when i dreamed of the circus) i would stand with one foot in the middle and the other pointed out.  a couple of falls fixed that.

in terms of safety - i think u just have to rely on ur extra senses.  once i felt very insecure jogging on this bike trail and let out a scream - just because i didn't feel so good.  it so happened there was a midgit stalker behind me and he had just jumped up to hit me on the neck.  now why someone so short would go to all the trouble to jump up, i have no idea --  but when i screamed - he about died.  he hadn't hit me yet - and suddenly changed his mind and ran itno the bushes.  it scared me - but then i thought - 'whew.  always trust ur instincts.'  better to scream for nothing than to just get dragged off like some kind of rabbit.

if he would have hit me - i would have acted as fast as i could and swung my left elbow as hard as i could into his ribs.  i'm sorry, but i'm not going to just lie down and say 'take me.'  he'd have had a vicious fight on his hands.  i think i'd be very good at making people laugh, though - because when my son tried to teach me some self-defence moves, he almost died of laughter.

**it hits me that u have to have a sense of balance to ride a horse properly, too.  when i was much younger, i became good enough to ride bareback.  that was like 16-17 years old.  now i look at ice-skaters, gymnasts, etc. and think hmmm...what would i be like if i'd kept it up?  u have to be in shape to move around quickly.

look at tennis players.  they're so light on their feet.  there's this fine center of balance that's always there.  otherwise they'd tip over.  and organists, for that matter.  have u ever tried playing the organ with the pedals.  it's a trip.  u play the keyboard up here and thepedals down there and basically feel like ur slipping over sideways.

sorry to go on and on, but these are my last few precious moments before the onslaught of kids who want the computer.

was watching that plastic surgery doc that takes karate in his spare time - and watched his face as he hit the stack of 5 or so boards he was supposed to break with his bare? hand.  to find the center of balance of 5 boards must be much more exceedingly hard than one board (or was it bricks?) anyway - it was the level of intensity of his face that caught me and i almost didn't look down to see what happened.  it was like he 'zoned' and then came back.  maybe pianists do this with very difficutl pieces.  u don't focus on the moment - but the beginning and ending?  u know u can do it.  u see it through to the end.

Well obviously not since i live in the west, i have been approached by a number of martial art practitioners, anyway form some strange reason they either get badly beaten up, or endup in a wheel chair or die in car crash, or end up working as bouncers in night clubs, shortly after approaching me. ( dont know why )

do u think it's the issue of meditation that the easterners have over the westerners.  i can see bouncers and all - but would u really use karate to get someone out of a bar?  wouldn't it look fairly ridiculous.  btw, zheer, how do u know where these people go?  i'm starting to get a sneaky bit suspicious about u.  but, in a few ways ur like me.  u explain urself even when u don't have to.

first eastern tip from a westerner:  stay calm. don't say anything (even against ur better judgement).

look for weak spots.  offer candy and gum as consolation prizes.

use distraction.  (carrying a fake badge can't hurt).  wigs, props, extra noses.

leave a paper trail.

under no circumstances give up ur shoes.

I know what some children are like , they are not satan they are just children and i guess some dont know the differnce between wright and wrong. Teenagers on the other hand can be dangerious since a lot of them have knifes , guns and so on so they end up in trouble with the police.

The satan is a totally different thing, am talking about the devil. Usually they travel un-noticed almost invisible.

yes. after i said that, i felt a bit guilty.  usually it is me, when i'm tired, just not patient.  sometimes, though, i think an imp tells them what to buy at the store.  for instance, we have this ant problem, so what do they come home with?  cookies and hard pretzel sticks which break into amillion pieces.

i was thinking about the joking and the reality.  i am seriously serious when i believe that satan is real.  i think each one of us has encountered him at some point in our lives.  it's a spiritual battle - and ur right - it's one that's invisible.  usually he wants us to focus completely on ourselves (at least that's my perception of his strategy).  to be the center of attention.  to be silly, ironic, satarizing (not that people can't joke around) but to the extreme where it becomes obnoxious.  i think satan enjoys craziness and crazy people.  why would he want us sane?  if we are sane we are making choices better.  nuthouses are temptations for his demons, probably, because that is where the mind is altered by drugs.  the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, brings peace of mind.  an ability to focus on others as well as your own life - and to think about things on a deeper level than superficially.  as u said - if satan thinks on a spiritual level - we have to do some kind of spiritual battle with him.  to actually say 'no' and resist.  the bible says 'resist the devil and he will flee from u.'  so --i take it that we have more power than we think.

tv shows make it look like people can become easily possessed.  actually, satan has to ask God about every person he wants to manipulate.  he cannot just go around doing as he pleases.  God's Spirit is our protection.  if we pray to Him daily to protect us - then what fear do we have from anything - man, satan, death,e tc.  there is no fear if we know we have life already thru the spirit.  that must be the peace that 'passes all understanding.'  the worries of this life are neverending - but we take them one day (and sometimes moment) at at time and pray about them and ask others to pray about them.  when two or three are gathered in His name (Christ's) there isn't a problem of wondering 'will i be possessed today?'  'will something bad happen to me today?'  we're thinking positive thoughts and eliminating negative.

i looked down at my leg today and thought, 'i missed a chance to proclaim Christ.'  when i was speaking of meditating - i should have said eastern philosophy is moot compared to meditating and praying to God.  he is the author of perfection in mind/body/soul.  if we want to be perfect in all things - we look to this Master - and no other master.  there are many who are masters of one or two things - but noone compares to our great God.  he is truly the Master of the Universe.  my leg, surprisingly, has healed not only straight -but is becoming stronger than i thought at first that it would.  someone came into my room the night before i had the closed reduction adn prayed for my roomate.  i said 'amen' after the prayer and they asked if they could pray for me, too.  so i said , 'sure.'  they prayed my leg would not only heal straight but that it would be stronger than before.  now, everytime i look at my leg i praise God.  sometimes bad things do happen - but it all works for good if u trust that God will take care of all your problems (large and small).

There are some people who abuse martial arts and some that don't. The reason is not the martial arts, but their personality. They would abuse other things aswell, not just simply the martial arts. But it is a good measure of who has this certain personality trait.

Not karate, but I used to train Muay Thai every night for ages. But I had some time off due to injury, and never got back into it. Thai boxing is hard, and the training is harder - takes a lot to get back upto proper fitness when you've had a long break!
