VIDEO - Group Piano Teaching Ideas
on: June 09, 2006, 03:54:15 PM

Above is a link to a video I made interviewing my colleague, Julie Knerr, on some successful group piano teaching activities that she has done. Included are video clips of her studio classes participating in these activities.

If you have any comments and feedback, or if you utilize any of these activities, we'd love to hear from you. I also hope this encourages other teachers to post up videos of your studios on YouTube.com so we can all learn from each other (Don't forget to get permission from students' parents before posting any videos of them!)

Hmmmmmmmmm, its a little like a piano master class for children, with added music theory and stretches. Good luck and i think your colleague is a good teacher.

that's great!  I've been thinking about offering group lessons.  It's nice to find a source of information.

Thanks for posting this, mario.  I have just started my own studio class this year(essentially a group lesson of sorts) though mine has had a growing emphasis on performance.  However, when the groups are smaller, I do like to have us play a game once in while.  I am interested in the rhythm game Julie had the kids doing at the table, and I am actually just wondering where I could get a set of cards like that.  Did she make them ?

Anyway, thanks again for sharing, I got some fun ideas !

Hi m1469,
Thanks for the feedback.  Julie just made those cards herself.  For that class, it was just a set with various rhythms up to 16th note patterns.  She's got a ton of great teaching ideas.  Feel free to drop her an email if you have any questions or comments for her.  She's very approachable as you can tell from the video.
Let us know if you post any video of your studio classes on YouTube!

Thanks, mario.  I thought I could glimpse that they were hand-written.  I did copy down Julie's email address and I will probably contact her, as you mentioned.

If I do end up posting any videos,  I will indeed let you know :).

I am wondering if all you offer your students is group lessons?  I dont like the idea of just doing group lessons, I know a lady who does it and I'm afraid that it may allow problems or something to slip through the crack without the teacher knowing.  LIke maybe a problem a student is having that could only be addressed on a one on one basis.  Just asking.
