Surely we will see a lot of kicks and tackles by Australia. But it will be a big suprise if they win any points against Croatia. The chance that they will manage this is about as great as the chance they will get points from Brazil. Of course it is not impossible.

wow, ronaldo looked like he had spent the past 4 weeks eating while his teammates have been training, he could hardly hardly move.
brazil looked crap, they like england, portugal, holland, etc will have lots to do if they want to impress and win the the cup.
on the other italy were fantastic, so were spain.
those are two teams that look like winning the WC.

Actually they should be a bit more arrogant and daring.

I think it is just that Brazil isn't that good. Also, as a team it will probably not work that well. At least not yet. And especially so with Ronaldo. Like the other Ronaldo he should probably be send home. He disrupts the team effort.

Same with France. Henry can't play the way he would like because of Zidane dominating the midfild. Also, it is rumured that the older players refuse to even talk with the younger ones. If that is the case the drama might be as big as last time for France.

Anyone saw Argentina today? They set fire on the world cup. Now the Brazillians will probably be shamed and try to play 'something' against Australia...

Too bad the elephants were eliminated, although Brazil x Holland always make great games (94 and 98)...

It seems that there will be nice games on the death matches... It can have Germany X England in the first death-match, and Germany X Argentina at least on the quarter-finals! Not to mention Brasil X Italy(they don't play together since 94) that might have on the first death match also...

And it's possible to have a final Brasil X Argentina, what would be "the game"...

ps: Holland x Argentina, to decide the first of the group will be definitely a great game.

Let's hope. Neither Mexico nor Portugal has an outstanding team. However, if Germany can not beat Ecuador, Netherland and Argentina will strive against each other to avoid the match vs Germany.

Let's hope. Neither Mexico nor Portugal has an outstanding team. However, if Germany can not beat Ecuador, Netherland and Argentina will strive against each other to avoid the match vs Germany.

Uuh, group C will cross with group D. Germany is in group A.

I think both Argentina and the Netherlands will gladly play against Germany or England. I rate Ivory Coast and Portugal higher. Of course Mexico seemed to be really weak last night. So if Argentina can play Mexico they will be happy.

The number one of group C will probably play Germany in the quarter final and the number two will probably play England in the quarter final. Of course before you can play England you probably have to beat Portugal.

I think Portugal is the one to avoid. But then in the half finals they will face one of these teams: Italy, Brazil, Spain.

Hmm,

4/07/2006,  21:00 in Dortmund: Argentina - Italy

05/07/2006  21:00 in München Portugal or Holland - Brazil, Spain or Czechia

So the fight to become winner of group E will be about avoiding Brazil. But I think that both Italy and Czechia are able to beat Brazil. France is nothing and they will lose against Spain, if they even manage to reach Spain.

So the final, maybe Argentina vs Spain.

Uuh, group C will cross with group D. Germany is in group A.

No.1 A vs No.2 B ( 1 )
No.2 A vs No.1 B ( 2 )
No.1 C vs No.2 D ( 3 )
No.2 C vs No.1 D (4 )
Then:

Winner ( 1 ) vs winner ( 3 )
Winner ( 2 ) vs winner ( 4 )

If Germany is No.2 A and wins ( 2 ), the winner ( 4 ) should be worried. Netherland and Argentina will try not to take part in ( 4 ), so they will try to be No.1 C. But if Germany is No.1 A, mmmm ...... how would they avoid being No.1 C ? :-\

Avoiding Germany means playing England and Portugal. England and Germany are both weak for second round teams. Germany was given no chance at all at the start of the tourney. But their offence and midfield actually suprised.
And England just played very bad because they have too many of the same types of players. They don't have any creativity at all.

Ivory Coast would have crushed them both.

So Portugal is the one to avoid and then Italy will be unavoidable. Otherwise you will have to play Brazil or Spain, probably.

It is silly to say that Argentina will score own goals to avoid germany since even Costa Rica, a country with a very small population and with no football history at all, managed to cut as butter through the german defence.
We all saw what Argentina did vs Servia & Montenegro. S&M beat Spain in the qualifications, were undefeated and had very little goals scored against them. Argentina vs Germany could be 8 - 0 for Argentina if Germany plays as bad as S&M did.

Sadly, germany has no way to avoid group C. They are the ones that should be scared.

Maybe they are not outstandingly strong, but they are the home team. Did you see how Korea won over Italy and Spain in 2002?

Yes.

But no one was afraid of S-Korea. They all underestimate them.

We weren't talking about actual results but about reputation. Why would a team in 2002 have lost on purpose to avoid S-Korea? No one would have done that.

Furthermore, you don't have to be the home team. I mean, Greece is the current European champion and they are awful.

Well, Portugal looked weak again. So it seems that both teams from Group C should be able to reach the quarter finals. Probably against Germany and English.

But things never go as expected. Especially in a tournament like this.

And when it comes to supporters the Dutch also have a 'home game'. Poland had a lot of supporters too but they are already eliminated. I guess the same goes from some other German neighbours. They should be able to rally enough supporters. With the tickets being a problem the bottleneck isn't the travelling but rather the ability to get tickets.

Of course in S-Korea the matter was different. Also, Portugal lost the final in their own country against a weak team, Greece.

And now US vs Italy with 11 vs 10 and 1-1

Hopefully they will get kicked out right now. Very possible because then all teams will have 3 points. At least that will be very exiting. Italy has to play Czechia. Desperate match for both favorites.

Did you see that elbow from de rossi on mcbride? clearly intentional. one more reason for me to hate italy. i remember the spitting episode from euro 2004 by totti very good also...seems they always do these kind of things. they are known for faking injuries, stalling time, playing unfair, and now this whole scandale with setting up matches, maybe causing juventus to be sent down a few divisions.

any thoughts on the last couple of games? (in paticular holland vs argentina)

I was a bit dissapointed by that match, not great world class football by either team imho. And even though I'm dutch I thought that a large proportion of the game was in the hands of the argentineans, but despite clumsy ball losses by holland they didn't have the strenght to take advantage from them. Good playing by boulahrouz I thought by the way.

I thought that the topic (which I confess does not, of itself, interest me in the least) was "World Cup". As in the singular. At the risk of seeming pedantic(!), does not the illustration here display two such? It's amazing how some people so often seem determined to depart from the original thread topic...

Your prose is so pedantic you sound like you are about to die of old age any time now. How old are you anyway?

As for the World Cup, I started out having high hopes for England, but with the recent turn of events (loss of Owen, Rooney's lack of form, and a disappointing performance against Sweden) have made me cautiously pessimistic.

...in your opinion - to which you are, of course, entitled. None of us knows when we will die, although I can assure you that, as far as I am aware, I am not "about to die" of anything; I apologise if that fact disappoints you (which it sounds as though it may do). My age is no concern of yours; there's no harm done by your asking, of course - any more than there is in my declining to answer.

Tash,

I'm certain that many of the Socceroo "supporters" are actually thinking, "Ohhh, so this is what soccer is"

Not only that, many Australians refer to soccer as "wogball" or "faggotball" but now, not only do they want to win the World Cup, they want to host it too..!

Australia is into the second round and that's all that matters - no one expected we'd get this far. :)

I have a feeling they'll tie against Italy then win in a penalty shootout. Don't ask me why - they're just my predictions.

that's right, getting into the top 16 is the bomb and we're celebrating it like it's the greatest sporting moment in australian history! haha, no i can't say i will be in leichardt in the middle of the night, haven't been there in quite a while, going to ashfield for the first time ever this week which should be exciting!
