Rep for big competition in the fall
on: June 13, 2006, 01:19:54 AM
The first round needs to be 20 mins and needs to contain a movement of a classical sonata and a 20th century piece. The second round needs to be a large-scale Chopin work. The third round needs to be 25+ mins and needs to contain at least one smaller Chopin work.
1st Round: Beethoven's Opus 109 (Mvmts 1 and 2) ~6 mins
Debussy's Fireworks OR Ondine OR La Terrace ~5 mins
Bach's P&F in G minor (WTC Bk I) ~5 mins?
Liszt: Un Sospiro ~6 mins
2nd Round: Chopin Scherzo No. 2
3rd Round: Beethoven Opus 109 (Mvmt 3) ~ 16 mins
Chopin Prelude In C-Sharp minor Opus 45 ~ 6 mins
Whatever Debussy I don't use in the first round ~10 mins +
What do you guys think? (If this happens to look familiar to anyone, it's also my rep for college auditions a few months after the competition.)

I think it's ok until the third round. Definitely not a good idea to just repeat composers; when choosing repertoire you must always try to be as diverse in both technical requirements of pieces, periods of pieces and types of pieces. Also, unless the repertoire asks for it like in the first round, using selected movements of pieces is always frowned upon.

I am playing the whole sonata, but I had to break it up due to time constraints and requirements for the opening round. If I had a choice, I'd spend basically all of round 3 playing that sonata.
