He only died in 1885 (6?can't remember), Daguerrotypes go way back. There was another guy floating around the same time who worked on taking pictures - dont remember his name though.Out of interest Edison supposedly recorded Brahms saying "This is Herr Brahms" (something like that) but they're debating over it's authenticity
I've got that recording and although the surface noise is legendary, I've read that it's authentic. He says something like, "Greetings (?) Dr. Edison; this is Dr. Brahms, Johannes Brahms." Then he plays a bit of a Hungarian Dance, though nothing can be heard beneath that hiss.
