Oldest photographied composer
on: June 15, 2006, 03:55:10 PM
We all have seen those paintings and drawings showing us Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.. Of course, photography didnt exist at that time, so painting was the only way to go...

Daguerre invented, in 1839, what would be the first system to take a pictures.

I wonder who is the first famous composer of whom we have a real picture. If you can provide a link to look at it, better  :)

I have an old book on Chopin that claims that photo was taken in 1848.

A much publicised photo of Paganini is supposedly a fake.

I used to be interested in old photos of composers. I think Rossini was the composer with the earliest birth date to be photographed.

He only died in 1885 (6?can't remember), Daguerrotypes go way back.  There was another guy floating around the same time who worked on taking pictures  - dont remember his name though.

Out of interest Edison supposedly recorded Brahms saying "This is Herr Brahms" (something like that) but they're debating over it's authenticity
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

I read somewhere under Schumann trivia that he was the first composer to be photographed.  I'll see if I can dig up the source...anyone else hear this?

I've got that recording and although the surface noise is legendary, I've read that it's authentic. He says something like, "Greetings (?) Dr. Edison; this is Dr. Brahms, Johannes Brahms." Then he plays a bit of a Hungarian Dance, though nothing can be heard beneath that hiss.
Fortune favours the musical.

Would it be possible for you to post that recording? I've tried to find that thing on the internet for a long time...

https://www.measure.demon.co.uk/sounds/Brahms.html You can hear it here. You must find it on the internet anyway. He is playing his first hungarian dance.
