romantic audition-piece
on: June 15, 2006, 11:23:38 PM
Hi

So I have to pick pieces for an audition (not the audition I posted about before, that's a different one).
They have a suggestion list of pieces and these pieces are in no way demanding (musically maybe, but not technically). But it's difficult for me to choose the pieces anyways. I'm unsure if the pieces I pick are too hard or too easy or too... whatever...just not sure.

suggestions are f. ex.:
- Beethoven Sonatas op. 10/1; 14/1/2; 49/1; 79
- Bach 2-pt Inventions BWV 722-786
- Bach WTC I

I have to play only three pieces at the piano, one of each epoque.
This far I chose
- Bach something from WTC I (still don't know which one)
- Beethoven Sonata No. 16, op.31/1 (either 1st or 3rd mvnt, I guess the level is ok, 2nd is beautiful but too long)

But I have no idea about what to take for the romantic part. I just can't think of any beautiful romantic piece  :(.
I have to fill approx. 20 minutes so the piece must be 6-7 minutes long.

I'd appreciate any suggestions so go ahead if you have an idea. Please :)

Really? You could for instance pick a Chopin nocturne, 27/2 is my favourite and is not technically difficult. Or maybe one of Grieg lyrical pieces, wedding day at Troldhaugen is very fun to learn and is at your level of diffuculty. Both these pieces are app 6 minutes long.

Since the suggestions are like this, I think it is obvious that the requirements are not as high as most Music Colleges. It is strange that they list the Beethoven op.49 as a suggestion when most other institutions exclude it from your choices.

For a romantic piece, I could have suggested playing a Chopin Ballade or Scherzo but from what I see now, a Chopin Nocturne will not be a bad choice especially if played well. Maybe the one in Db Op.27 can be a good one or in F minor Op.55. You have many choices. Or, you can go for a technically undemanding Etude such as Op.10 no.3 or no.11.

u could play a Nocturne, it's a good idea. There's also mendelssohn,as a Romances sans paroles.Or an intermezzo of Brahms. (excuse my english, i'm french, so...)
