Etude Encore HELP
on: June 22, 2006, 11:34:26 PM
Hey everyone,

I am searching for a piece! Please help.

I just performed my five-piece repertoire in concert, which went VERY well. I have to perform August 10th with my friend, and I'm looking for an etude encore to learn. Here is my performance repertoire:

June Concert
Beethoven - Appassionata
Rachmaninoff - Prelude Op. 3/2 in C sharp minor
Rachmaninoff - Moment Musicaux Op. 16/4 in E minor
Liszt - Un Sospiro
Liszt - La Campanella

August Concert
Bach - WTC Book I C sharp major
Chopin - Op. 51 Impromptu in G flat major
Rachmaninoff - Prelude Op. 23/5 in G minor
Rachmaninoff - Prelude Op. 23/2 in B flat major

I have all of these pieces learned, but I have a month and a half to learn no new material! What etude should I learn? I have already learned a bunch of etudes, such as: Chopin 10/4, 10/12, 25/1, 25/12 but I'm stuck as to what to learn next.

I have been teaching myself Chopin 25/5 in E minor and 25/6 in G sharp minor (thirds), but perhaps you have another suggestion for a nice etude encore :-D

-Max
My favorite piano pieces - Liszt Sonata in B minor, Beethoven's Hammerklavier, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, Alkan's Op. 39 Etudes, Scriabin's Sonata-Fantaisie, Godowsky's Passacaglia in B minor.

what's going to be your program for this concert?
it's easier to suggest an etude if we know which pieces you'll be playing  :P

Hey, sorry if I wasn't clear.

The JUNE concert already passed (19th of June), and I performed all of that repertoire, with no encore piece. In August, I'm doing the next repertoire in a concert (the 10th of August), only this time I want an encore piece. Please suggest an encore to follow the August recital!

Thanks.

What about learning a Rachmaninoff etude-tableaux?  33/5 in e-flat minor would make a good encore.  33/6 (I think) in e-flat major is also good (here's a video of hamelin playing this one as an encore
).

Yaaa Eb major would be an excellent encore, powerful finish and it's like less than 2 minutes....

Although they're all different, I think any one of these would be a nice encore:

[ETUDE]Debussy                     Pour les cinq doigts
[ETUDE]Liszt                           Harmonies Du Soir
[ETUDE]Liszt                           Ricorzanda
[ETUDE]Scriabin                      Op.8, No.12
[ETUDE]Szymanowski             Op.4, No.3
[ETUDE]Wild                           (One or a combo) 7 Virtuoso Etudes on Gershwin pieces

Chopin                       Nocturne, Op.48, No.1
Gershwin                   Preludes for Piano
Prokofiev                    Suggestion Diabolique

Does it have to be an etude?

I like the Rachmaninov Etude-Tableux 39/6 & 33/6 too, but you already have 2 rach pieces...

There are tons more, but those are all I could think of at the moment. Hope that somewhat helps.

Wow the way Hamelin played it... is it supposed to be that god damn fast?!  That's way faster than any recording I've heard  :-[  Wow I hope it's not supposed to be that fast lol... or else i'm gonna have to pretty much restart it.

If you already know Chopin 25/12, then use that. Not only is it saving you time by only having to brush up on it rather than learn it from scratch, but it's a very impressive encore.
