Pope Benedict, a pianist?
on: June 23, 2006, 02:11:16 PM

I've read that the Pope plays piano. I've seen a couple of photos with Him at the piano, and that he plays Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms. He picked his piano to the Palazzo Apostolico.

Has someone more information? How does he sound?

Benedict does play the piano, and he is a thinker on music; his new forthcmoing book is said to have at least a chapter on music in it.  Here is an essay he wrote about music:

Yes, he's a pianist. By the Way, Don't you find something scary in his face? He has that creepy madman expression, something like the violinist Yehudi Menuhin?

Menuhin in his latest years resembled a paedophile...

the pope does play piano, apparently pretty well
Yehudi Menuhin was a great violinist, especially in his younger years. I don't think he looked like a madman or a paedophile

What is that score in the piano?

Could it possibly be.... Hanon!? :o

The Pope plays Mozart. There's a Mozart score on the piano, or not?
I don't think it's Hanon.

I've looked for video or audio clips of him playing, but have come up empty. I'll bet he's pretty good, but no way to know untill we hear him...  ???

This picture of the pope at the piano is astonishingly close to nonsense. I know President Clinton could blow in a saxophone, Boris Yeltsin did sing once in a rockconcert, but Arensky, hold your pony, dear.
You 'bet' for what ? A Popess ? A live Pope performance of 'Für Elise' ? A Muslim-made grand piano ? A Buddhist sonate ?
"The pope is 'pretty' good ?! To use the word 'pretty' to describe an eventually caracteristic of the pope is unappropriate. The pope is a rather stiff and ''fraud' kind of man.
This topic is rightly classified in Miscellanous. Anything But Piano could have been an alternative but I definitely think that Arensky, as a way of obtaining forgiveness, should post his version of a Maria Magdalena Bach .

Yeah, well, that's your opinion, and it doesn't really amount to much. You can't say that about the pope. You don't know him, and you can't assess his ability to play the instrument because you've never heard him. I'll tell you something, it takes a lot to be the pope. A lot of time, a lot of effort, and you have to be good at what you do. The pope is anything but a fraud. You could never do it, so maybe you should just keep your mouth shut. Arensky, you are free to do as you desire.

Ok! Which one?   8)

The best is Richard Nixon playing the piano, he was "pretty" good too! Composed too, there's a clip of him with orchestra playing one of his pieces a la concerto from the "Tonight Show" circa 1964. There's also one of him playing Chopin's c# minor Waltz. Couldn't find them on Youtube, though...  :-\

But I found this picture of him accompanying Pearl Bailey... and isn't that Buddy Rich on drums?  8)

Buddy Rich, indeed... And no offense taken.

For the Maria Magdalene Notebook I was thinking of an exquisite Musette (Komponist Unbekannt) BWV Anhang 126 or the Menuet of Christian Petzold BWV Anhang 115.

Looking forward hearing from you and

This is a strange penance: playing music by an heretic Lutheran... ;D

What goes around comes around.  :)

Richard Nixon plays piano. I have to change my evaluation from " pretty good" to "not bad" though. But I've heard much worse playing and the pieces is inoffensive and rather pretty.

How would it be possible to know that? I mean, when it comes to pianists you don't know you don't know who they are nor how well they play?

Plus, did you hear her play?

Furtheremore, she should have made the pianist career choice because she makes a very poor diplomatic agent.

Condoleezza originally wanted to be a professional concert pianist  and she studied the Piano seriously for quite some time.

Yes I have heard her play and she is good (Was at least)

That's why I said she should have become a concert pianist after all.
