les 2 ped.

In Debussy's Octave Etude at measure 79-80 there is "les 2 ped." written below the staff. I am thinking that this means to use both the sustain and sostenuto pedal here but I just want to make sure. Any insight?

I can't seen why sostenuto would be warranted there - is it possible, regardless of the dynamic marking, that he requests una corda for color?

Best,
ML

you are right- 'les 2 Ped.' means that both pedals should be held down.

I always thought it means the normal pedal, and the una corda pedal.
Currently learing:
- Chopin: Ballade No.3
- Scriabin: Etude Op. 8 No. 2
- Rachmaninoff: Etude Op. 33 No. 6
- Bach: P&F No 21 WTC I

It means the damper pedal and the una corda. I'm pretty sure Debussy didn't have a sostenuto pedal (I know for a fact Ravel didn't).
