No Boring Bits!!
on: June 26, 2006, 09:02:53 AM
which works do you think contain no boring bits? i know many works are supposed to be musically deep, but for the amateur and the musically untrained, most of these are just boring.

so, please delve into the memory bank, and think of some works with no boring bits.

i'll start with the Entertainer (Joplin)

medtner op 20 no 1
scriabin op 11 no 14 and no 24 (they're too short to be boring ~50 secs)
Rachmaninov op 39 No 5
Alkan complete op 39

sure they're great works, but to someone who amateurs or non-musicians, most people would probably fall asleep listening to things like the Goldberg variations, whereas the entertainer could literally entertain everyone for the whole duration of the work.   :)

Yeah - there aren't very many boring bits in Chopin's Preludes nos. 16 and 24, or in the Scriabin etude in D sharp minor op.8 no.12, although you'll probably have some trouble if you want to actually play them.

Continuing my previous post..................
===================

-I was just recently exposed to Liebermann's Gargoyles... those are really good pieces, especially the fourth, which I think depicts a gargoyle the best - and is never boring
-Rimsky Korsakov flight of the bumblebee (audience is familiar, and will be pleased)
-Bach Italian Concerto 3rd movement, preludes bk 1 in C-, C# +, G+,  bk 2 G#-
-Beethoven Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement, Tempest 1st movement, Waldstein 3rd
-Alkan - pretty much anything, if you can pull it off
-Prokofiev 7th snta 3rd mvmt March the love of 3 oranges, 3rd snta, suggestion diabolique
-Rachmaninoff preludes op 23, Bb major, op 32, C major, E major, G# minor
-Debussy ce qu'a vu le vent d'ouest, feux d'artifice, Dr gradus... and snow is dancing
-Grieg , Lyric pieces:  Puck, Wedding day at Troldhaugen, ....... Sonata op7 1st and 4th mvt
-Kapustin, 2nd sonata 4th mvmt, again if you can pull off...... also some jazz preludes
-Khatchataurian sonatina in C major, 1st and 3rd movement, impressive and quite easy

that's all for my miscellanious list of unboring pieces!

Why do you want no 'boring' bits as you put it?......... the real skill of any musician is taking these 'boring' bits as you call them, and playing them well and convincingly......

oh, come on! join in the game... dont be an elitist...
there must be some bits that are played by your favourite performer which still don't make you listen hard to them... i loose my interest every now and then... mainly in second movements... but i think (please dont hurt me for saying it) Rach 3 is all nice... even the second movement is more impressive than some first/last movements to concertos...
The sauer concerto just beats it though... can't beat it for a concerto... except maybe the Dohnanyi concertos...
Loads of good music out there to celebrate...  ;D

the sauer concerto no 1 is definitely a great concerto. if only his 2nd piano concerto were half as good. his first, however, is one piece that definitely has no boring bits, as with dohnanyi's 2 piano concertos. great music. there are jsut soooo many pieces out there with no boring bits, but too many to name.

For non-musical people, most of the faster Liszt works will keep them entertained by your bravura. Also, non-musical listeners tend to love Chopin, whether it's "boring" (like the nocturnes) or not. As long as you don't whip out something too long like a ballade.
