Yamaha u1 or Yamaha P121N
on: July 01, 2006, 10:18:44 PM
First of all, sorry for making two similar threads, but I am in a hurry to make a decision and need good advise.

I am going to buy an upright and have tried many different models. It has come down to the choice between two: Yamaha U1 or Yamaha P121N.

The salesman claims that the P121N is identical to U1, except its produced in europe and some small visual design differences. The P121N is 15% less expensive than the U1.

I tried these to models in the store today and they did not sound the same to me. In my opion the U1 had a much richer sound and it was easier to play difficult passages on (maybe because the sound was better).

Is there really a difference between them or am I just going mad? The pianos location in the room could have an effect, but I doubt it.

Listen to the pianos instead of the salesman.

Affordability aside, if your ears and fingers tell you that Piano A is the better than Piano B, then go with Piano A. It shouldn't be any more complicated than that. ;)

I very much doubt that the P121N is produced in Europe. I am not aware of any Yamaha-branded piano being produced in Europe at all.
