take offs and landings
on: July 08, 2006, 11:14:42 AM
this thread should probably be in miscellaneous because it sort of has to do a little with piano.  ok.  i was bicycling the other day and was watching how birds took off from the trail and landed here and there.  the most difficult thing about flying seems to be that little hop into the air or aim for the landing site.  it's really all dependent upon the conditions, the wind, and how the bird is functioning (if it's not injured or something).

well, then i started thinking about the piano and how sometimes the focus is so intensely on 'doing it so perfectly' when really all we need is to get the piece rolling and to end well.  people usually only remember the ending anyway.  if u can get the thing into the air - it usually flys by itself, right!

they put these new signs on the bike trail 'speed hump.'  the first time i saw them - i thought - hmmm.  they don't say to slow down.  perhaps u are supposed to speed over the hump?  i tried it and it worked.  u become airborne for a short while.  not sure how i was going to tie this all in with piano.  maybe ingagroznya can help?

The bird does just decide to start, then uses an automated pattern of movements to do that, it does not sequetially spread wings, do that little hop, etc (at least i think so, never was a bird..).
piano playing i should just decide to play a sound or melody, that just do that without thinking of keys and movements.... im far far from that

Centipedes do not have to think about every leg they have and consciously move one by one.

Just like a human can 'just walk' so does every other animal. It is all reflex or routine. Your brains automatically do the calculations. Requiring to walk like humans do requires a lot of calculation. Engineers have been building and programming humanoid robots and it is really difficult to program a robot with two legs.

We aren't aware of the enormous calculations that we do every second to get the light on our cornea into mental images. Actually, a lot of creatures and insects, that cannot even calculate 1+2 do enourmous calculations to do every day things. Like a spider building its web. The hearing of any insect, that requires 3d calculations to identifiy the direction from which the sound comes. All very complex but these creatures without intelligence can do it. So there are different levels of intelligence.
