Ties vs. Slurs + Schirmer edition - again!
on: December 25, 2003, 05:59:21 PM
In Chopin's Ballade no.1, where the main ff theme comes in (measure 109), there's a repeated E natural octave at the end of the bar in the righthand (before it goes into the set of quaver octaves).

Every recording I've got (3) has the pianist playing the top E again, despite there being a "tie" on the top E - and no hint of any mezzo staccato notation in my Schirmer edition.

Does anyone else's edition have anything different?...and is this rule of "if it's the same note it's a tie" concerning slurs a matter of player interpretation?

Schirmer's a horrible edition for anything, I bet they could even mis-edit the C major scale. About having a bad edition of anything else...I remember this one time I downloaded the Fantasie-Impromptu but at the time didn't know what key it was in. Apparently the person who editted it transposed it from its original key into A minor, so now I've got to re-learn the entire thing over again.

On comparing a few scores I noticed that my Schirmer edition of Mozart's A minor sonata had been re-written in places by the editor so as to avoid parallel fifths,

i once picked up an edition of chopin pieces, quote, "Trancribed, edited and arranged by..." some guy- it was astonishing, pieces were in different keys, most of the chords were stripped to octaves, the slurring was completely changed, i couldn't believe it.  it's bad enough to simply edit something, let alone transcribe and arrange it at the same time.

why do people feel the need to put pieces in so called "easier" key signatures?  it is an utter waste of time for all concerned
What it all comes down to is that one does not play the piano with one’s fingers; one plays the piano with one’s mind.-  Glenn Gould

Ties can improve your prospects
Slurs are added later by detractors, and those whose ties weren't as good as yours.

The moral: have the best ties.
