Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1
on: July 14, 2006, 04:32:43 AM
I'm thinking of learning this one (it will need to be performance-ready by January).  Any tips/warnings/suggestions?

One of my favorites. Played it two years ago. Lost a competition with it haha. Just be careful with the cadenza in the third mvt. Don't go too fast, but don't go too slow either. I played the whole thing terribly slow now that I look back on it... and if you really want, I have a very crappy video of me playing it - though, I don't know where I'd post it because it's pretty big (and embarassing at how bad it was).

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
