A music score is not a map for the hands, it's a representation of music.

You play with one hand.  In this case, because the notes that overlap are clearly part of the melody, it's easier to play with the right hand.  The left does nothing at these points.

I'm guessing that it is written this way because if you were singing along, you would omit the melody line and just play the left hand.  So the editor wanted the notes there.

Maybe?

If one were to sing, the accompaniment would change.  That's what the chords are for.  The piano part probably would omit the melodic part in favor of providing the harmony by playing something else.

I personally do it all the time.
Doesn't sound great, but not too shabby either.

I do it when sightreading, as it helps to keep a consistent tempo.  I find it somewhat difficult, but I know a lot of better players than myself who find it impossible. 

Guess we should see if Barry Manilow is on the forum.  Barry?  Barry?
