Suggestions on new piece?
on: July 21, 2006, 11:56:54 PM
I am a beginner-intermediate  player, buti think i suck. I just finished canon in d withen a year since i was lazy to practice, but i finished. Does any one have a suggestion of another piece that could be classical or pop or just something very popular? Something a little easy and on-beat, and has a tune that is nice and catchy. Ideas? thanks.

Two thoughts:

1. Next time you're in Borders Books, pick up a copy of "The Piano Bench of Classical Music."  There are many tuneful intermediate pieces in it. (At least I think they're at intermediate level.)

(I got the book as a Father's Day present, but am too busy with my assigned pieces and drills to play anything else.)

Next, join

https://www.classicalarchives.com/

Costs $3 a month. When you see something you might like in the book, listen to or download it at the site above. If it passes that test, sit down and learn it.

It helps a lot to know what a piece sounds like before you try it, right?

You can download music from

https://www.classicalarchives.com/

for free, come to think of it. You're limited to 5 (I think) downloads a day. The recording are sometimes pretty lousy, but you nevertheless hear what the piece should sound like.

Go there and explore. Right-click a piece you might be interested and select "Save as"
to put it in your hard drive. Then listen to it.

After that, check the free sheet music here to see if the freebie download is available. If not try

https://www.sheetmusicarchive.net/

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the composer of your choice.

Good luck!

If I had to recommend some immediate pieces to you, I would have to say look at some Chopin, Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. Everybody knows Fur Elise. You know the melody. If you'd like to play it, go ahead. Also by Beethoven, his Sonatas Op. 49 Nos. 1 and 2, and Op. 79 are his three easiest sonatas. Give them a try.  Mozart's Sonata K.545. Another recognizable piece. Possibly a little more difficult than something that you've tried. That means it'll challenge you. From Chopin, there are several of his works. I would take a look at his preludes, typically numbers 4, 6, 7, 20, and maybe 13 and 15. Those seem to be the easiest (to me, anyway). However, keep in mind... that how you practice determines how you progress.

Hope this helps.
