went to a concert last night....
on: July 22, 2006, 01:48:09 AM
aka, I was in hell! I went to see my friends band and they infortunately had 2 support acts of which I knew nothing of. My friends band was pretty good (the mixing was just a mess for all the bands, but in terms of their playing they were pretty good)
The support acts on the other hand made me question why the hell am I bothering to properly 'learn' an instrument!! They consisted of a drummer (who was probably the best of the group), a bass player who cold play notes - I think, I couldn't hear underneath all the distortion, a guitar player who knew 3 chords (again, I think, not being able to hear) and a
singer
who did not sing but rather screamed gibberish (I could not understand a word, if he was actually forming words, I don't know) and rolled around on the floor!)
After this joke had finished, I was told that WB had signed them up for an international recording contract in LA!!!!!!!
HOW THE HELL DO THESE NO TALENTS GET A RECORDING CONTRACT!!!!!!!!
It makes me feel great that I practise all day, and get no where on the international scene whilst these morons score a deal like that.
How has contemporary music descended to this? There's no skill, it's not aesthetically pleasing - why not listen to a jackhammer, they sounded pretty much the same - people screaming over loud noises (substitute drums!). I mean, the punk phase was literally no talents 'performing' 'music' - I can't think of any other art form or anything else where non-specialists succeed! What's the point of all our training when people like this get deals, and the properly trained musos struggle?
This probably sound like i'm bad nouthin pop music, but I do like some pop music, just the sort of stuff that has some skill and effort in it.

Greetings.
Isn't it evident, that perhaps those agents that promoted them didn't know anything about music, or poorly made music? They just want the money and could care less if all they made was discordant noise. Apparently if they were to promote the group, they'd promote others like them. People apparently think it is cool. I saw a documentary once that tried to define "cool". Certain "music groups" performed what is actually some very popular "music" amongst teens. The content is of course centered on lyrics and an odious sound which could serve as noice, has attracted many teenagers in search of cool. The group of which you speak of might be doing exactly that, indulging in an ephemeral concert tour from which some money will be made, and then the group will be forgetten, because of the music quality. The agents probably couldn't care less about the music quantity. In my opinion, if the music was actually good it would not get promoted by them simply because it will have no "cool" value. Rather depressing. Hope this helps.

gee, that's great!
Makes me wonder why there are SO many people playing good music who have no chance of making it when all they have to do is venture into 'pop' culture music to make some big bucks quick.

That's the truth of the modern world society mindset: no appreciation of things of quality. Why is that, because one doesn't have to think to get it, one doesn't have to ask any questions, one is going with the public, one doesn't think. Let's talk about the writ for instance. Shakespeare, Chauser, Sophocles, and many more great writers and thinkers are completely ignored by teenagers. Schools provide the opportunity to stuff it down their throats, but not only not understanding the messages, but the teenagers completely despise it. I love Shakespeare. I love how he forms structure withing plays, how he plays with the colors and timbres of words and his distinct style. There is of course no comparison of that to the things the modern teenager reads, if he reads. Same applies for music. Pop music is very simple, worth only for a couple of listens if that. The other popular trash(yes, I am saying trash) that teenagers listen to(whether noise or screaming, ect) actually deteriorates the brain. I have read articles claiming that the slow pulse of modern day hip-hop makes the brain more vulnerable to it being vulnerable to the "sung" material, thus etching useless, if not potentially dangerous thought into the listener. Baroque music on the other hand, speeds up the brain retention process, thus making it more likely to remember material. perfect for learning.
Concerning the money, all in all, it is a plight. Devoting one self to good music will be very good for oneself and for others. Bringing trash to the world will not make the world smarter, but quite the opposite. In my opinion, real music is not tied with money. Money makes people corrupt. Good music is pure, it is free. It is not bound by money. Therefore, I think that there is a reason for why popular music is connected to money, because it sucks. The more degrading the music, the more cash involved with it. If classical music would entail sumptuous treatment, it would go out of business and eventually become somewhat of a monopoly, where one group or individual controls the others. Classical music is not like that. It is free.
