My first time on the site so hope this works. I am from the UK and passed grade 8 piano 6 years ago. However, I am a very poor pianist who strives to improve but seems to find everything a struggle. Going through a number of pieces I have noticed that some editions  suggest using different fingers for repeated notes. I have come accross this before but ignored it. Is it vital to use different fingers for repeated notes and if so why? I am guessing it has something to do with clarity and tone but to me, it just appears to make already difficult pieces even harder.

Can anyone suggest a practice routine to improve my playing? Should I be playing scales again? Pieces? I have not had a piano lesson since passing the grade 8 and now learn cello with my old piano teacher.

I don't have a lot of time and have never been good at practical music. I am a school music teacher but have always struggled-probably because I am a good all rounder (I have grade 8 trumpet and voice, am learning cello to currently grade 5 standard and am also doing a part time MA in Education) but don't shine on any instrument and just tend to make millions of mistakes. I always feel very inferior to other music teachers and don't quite know how to improve myself.

For repetead notes, when they are fast and many repetitions, if you use only one finger, your forearms and wrists will quickly be tired and exposed to injuries, I guess (and it's not even sure that you could play them). But if it goes slowly it's of no use to alternate fingers, just old traditions.
