Scouting for a Piano teacher
on: July 29, 2006, 05:35:48 PM
How does someone find a piano teacher in his locale?

Other than using the phone book.

Go to local music stores. They usually have a public bulletin board providing free advertisements for any local music teachers, technicians, and private secondhand instrumental trade/sells.

I've tried the phone book before... that might, or might not work.

I agree with the piano store option.  I have asked several of the full-time staff people who was well-respected in the area.  Another option - check out a local college or university and see who is available to teach.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

No. But playing poker online at the moment. I'll explain later - when I lose my play money.

Lessons on Fridays. We baby sit our 9month old grandchildren all day Thursday. Wears me out. I lose the whole day before my lesson with no practice, and feel like I also lost my continuity. Tried to get the school to let me be taught by Natalia on Mondays. They wouldn't or couldn't (don't know which) comply. So I quit, and am now looking for a Monday-anytime teacher.

I intended to try the local college on Monday. In the meantime, I shopped here for other options.

Hated to lose Natalia. She's has not emailed a reply to my sorrowful apology. :'( :'( :'(

Poor me.

If you think about it, you teachers could teach via the internet.

With DSL, a piano cam and sound, you could get away with it.

Only the student would be on camera, and that's fixed mostly on the hands,
but sometimes you scan to check for posture, no boogers in his nose, no cigarettes in his mouth, no booze in sight, shoes on his feet, teeth in his head, elbows halfway up his arms, and so on.

Once in awhile you actually listen. But when you hear his fingers hitting all the wrong notes, you turn down the sound.

At the end of the lesson you turn the sound back up, give him hell, he PayPals you 50 Euros, and it's on to the next idiot in the queue.

You never had it so good!  :D :D :D I missed my calling.

Missing a whole day of practice before the lesson day does not sound like a reasonable excuse to quit lessons with the teacher you like. You have 6 other days to work on your pieces, including Friday ( I'm sure your lesson is not at 9 in the morning ). What is the deal about continuity?

I can't defend it to your satisfaction. Sorry.

Barnowl,

Go to the MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) website at: https://mtna.org/home.htm

On the right hand side, you'll find a link that says "Find a Music Teacher".

From there, you can search by State, Instrument, and Zip Code.

All the teachers that come up through the search are MTNA Nationally Certified Teachers of Music (NCTM).

I do not think teacher's location matter all that much in this case. Barnowl is looking for a teacher who will practice for him too. Some students just like to pick pieces :).

Hahaha, "what's the point of learning practicing pieces if I can get someone else to play it for me ?" right ? ;D

Right. We all have/had our share of those students. I think I can smell those now by the way they sweat. They sweat... umm... different.

Nothing is free unless you live in Soviet Russia. Piano stores sells  piano teachers who sells pianos. Teaching skill and education are secondary. My own experience of going to a music store was actually a pleasant one before I start teaching.

Free ads about second hand instruments? Are you kidding me? Used pianos?

Ah, someone is always trying to sell you something. Good thing - you would not find me there, Barnowl.
Money. Money. More Money. I'd rather give my dues to yellow pages and have a massive ad. Associations are depressing for the most part. Fight me, if you care. I hope you don't.
