i want to play something else
on: July 31, 2006, 12:52:37 AM
ok i am looking for more music to play...i can play hugo reinhold's impromptu in C# minor (beautiful piece), lecuona's malaguena, lizst's libestraume no 3, debussy's claire de lune and girl with the flaxen hair, i'm almost finished learning brahms rhapsody in g minor, i can play rach's prelude in c# minor, ravel's (slow, dissonant) prelude, tchaikovsky's romance op 5, and shumann's traumerei...i like lizst's hungarian rhapsody no 2 in c# minor, balakirev's islamey, ravel's jeux d'eau, gershwin's rhapsody in blue, and chopin's plonaise i Ab major (Heroic)...but when i try to play those, i just get lost...so does anyone have any suggestions on what i should play?
ps - i learned reinhold's in less than a week and i've only been playing for a year...so i catch on quick...the ones i want are just
TOO

Try an etude. Chopin Op 25 #1 or #2, Rach op 33 #7 [in g minor]. Or maybe try an easier polonaise by chopin? If you're inclined to play a Ravel, I'd suggest his Sonatine, but start with the 2nd movement. Or try a Schubert impromptu, one of the Ab major or Eb major would be good. If you wanna play pieces like Islamey and Jeux d'Eau, your gonna have to work your way up... I'm assuming you've only played Ravel's prelude... so play the sonatine, which would be between that and the Jeux d'eau.

Also try Debussy's "Reflets dans l'Eau" (from Images book 1), or "... Les colinnes d'Annacapri" from Preludes book 1. Why not pick other Rach preludes or Scriabin's... and then move to their etudes.
You could also go for something very different, yet quite educative, like Bach (2 and 3 voices Inventions, preludes and Fugues from the WTC) or Scarlatti sonatas.
Piano repertoire is HUGE! Listen to a lot of recordings, you'll certainly find dozens of pieces which are musically gratifying and reasonably challenging.
