Beginner Piano
on: August 01, 2006, 05:16:22 AM
Hey everyone. I've decided to learn the piano, but I need some advice on finding a good beginner piano. I don't have the money for a real piano, but all the cheap electronic keyboards I've found only have 61 keys. I'm really looking for a digital piano for only a few hundred dollars; it doesn't even need to sound good, simply be sufficient for me to learn on. Or can I learn to play on a keyboard with only 61 keys?

Thanks for your help,
Matt

Hi Matt,
congrats on your decision. I would suggest that you stay away from the 61 keyed music keyboards. While some now have touch sensitivity, they probably don't have weighted keys.
I would suggest either a Yamaha P-60 or P-70 digital piano. Some of the Casio's in that price range are good too (though their action is a bit too light for my tastes).
You will find out once getting past the basics, 61 keys will limit you bigtime.
Cheers,
Ron

Hi, I would agree with Ronatello, I purchased a Yamaha P-60 and I am very pleased with it. I like it almost as much as my acoustic piano. I travel a bit and it is easy to take with me and I play with earphones, so I don't disturb anyone. I think the P-60 is discontinued. But you may find one out there still in stock somewhere. If not the P-70 is basically the same thing. Good luck with the lessons.
